My First Half Marathon - We Run The Grove
On June 12, 2016, I completed my first half marathon (13.1) miles at We Run The Grove in Los Angeles, California.
My initial goal was to run 6 miles. I have been training by running 3/4 miles with hills every other day. I have increased my pace to 10 minutes per mile.
When I showed up to We Run The Grove, I had the option of running a 10k ( 6 miles) or 13 miles (half marathon). After running a few miles and with the motivation from my running group, Movement Runners, I decided to push myself and try to run 13.1 miles.
I did well my first 6 miles. I had listened to my workout playlist and got into the zone. At mile 7 my phone died.
To keep myself on track, I focused on breathing and enjoying the scenery. At mile 10 I started to get exhausted. Luckily, I had a running partner so we were able to help each other out.
At mile 11, I tripped and almost fell in the street. Luckily, I practice yoga, so I was able to balance myself out. After the trip, I realized that I had to concentrate and push even harder to make it to the end. Each mile toward the finish line was so hard!
When I made it to the finish line, I felt so relieved and happy. I realized that it was all mental.
I would not have been able to complete the half marathon without the encouragement from my running group, friends and family. After completing my run, I decided to train for the full Long Beach marathon (26 miles) in October. I have 4 months to train. I know it will be tough but I WILL do it!
For all you runners out there, what are some tips you have for marathon training?
